You are a WOMAN!!!!

'If I may remind, you are a women and you can ask for help'....said one of my colleague from my previous team (company). He was reminding me this after he heard my story from that previous day at work -  I had worked all night till 3am at office, I had trouble with my car and I happened to fix it and got home at 5am or so.

'Why do u want to be a Hero? When you are already a heroine (female version)?' Well this comment came from guy friend (my best friend after my bro), he said this to one of my comment where I was trying to fight out a situation that was not in my control.

My brother would always call me to check if I am ok when I am traveling by myself.

These small gestures touched my heart for couple of reasons, that there are few observers who are sensitive ....and  sometimes, I myself become so numb to situations / daily routines that I forget about my core self and work like a machine.

This week is one of those, when I lie in a plush hotel's bed after a hectic week and I feel so numb with no emotion. And I know how much burnt out I feel with no excercise or proper diet. Everything is accessible ...food..gym..comfort ...except time..

Time vs Me....i know what's more worth...

NeVeR gIvE uP oN LOVE!!...

Well, i sound like a teenager... but I read this really nice article on the web and feel happy about it..

What a day it was at work! been awhile with such a day packed with so many things. I am just sitting down to read something outside work stuff and I found this article that talks about 'how one should never give up on love ' ... :)..

I always believed in love but I think i had almost given up in the recent past... this read makes me rethink and agree.... :)

-----
Excerpts from that read (Written by: Luminita D. Saviuc of Purpose Fairy | “To those who have given up on love: I say, “Trust life a little bit.” ~ Maya Angelou)

The way I see it, there ain’t no bigger and more powerful force in the whole universe than LOVE itself. The biggest mistake anyone can make is to give up on love. How can you give up on something that’s in you? How can you give up on something that is YOU? We’re so ignorant. We have no clue what love is. We think that love is the source of suffering, but is that what love really is?

Believe it or not, it’s not love that hurts. It’s not love that’s causing us to feel pain and heartbreak, but rather our attachment to how things should or shouldn’t be.

“Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away.”

---
Isn't this true ... we are more worried about the attachments, in the process we become controlling, loose patience and doubt etc etc....

pUdUcHeRrY! ...aka pondicherry

I have been thinking of Pondi trip for awhile now... was waiting for the heat days to get over. Also, thought it would be a good trip with a companion, but sure it did not work out for obvious reasons. I decided I will do a lone trip. It was not eazy, I was contemplating till the last minute - I booked the hotel / bus on Thursday couple hours before the bus departure and then told my parents - they were surprised and concerned that i was traveling alone. But did not have much to say due to short notice.

Its been awhile since I have traveled long distance in a bus, maybe to Tirupati (a known terrain) last year around this time - else, I avoid bus journey for so many reasons.... (my feet get dirty is the most silliest reason i can think of). Well, I was sitting in the bus even before I knew it was real. It was a seat in the last row, it was only me and another stranger in those last seats... the road was bumpy all through out, i couldn't sleep through the night as i was anxious. Overall it wasn't bad - the bus arrived into pondi at 5:20am, it was a 5min auto-rickshaw ride to my hotel - Vila bayoud... by the sea. I sea road was blocked for morning walks, so I had to walk a block from where the auto stopped. To my surprise the hotel main door was locked (a narrow passage wooden high gate), I tried knocking but no response. So, I sat on the bench outside the hotel overlooking the beach and waited. It had one of the beautiful mornings, a lot of people doing their morning exercises and i just sat there looking at the sunrise while the dark clouds vanished. At 6am, I heard the wooden gate open.. I went up to see and the guy was a bit taken back. I then told him about my booking...we went in, did the checkin and he handed over the room keys directing me to the first floor. I locked myself and crashed on the bed to get some sleep - I then woke up after couple of hours, and I was ready for my vacation.

The hotel was a vila ... with 14 rooms.. beautifully placed overlooking the beach (my room wasn't sea facing and it didn't matter, I wasn't going to sit in my room all day long). I rented a scooter (helpful hotel staff), took directions to Aurovile and I headed out. The drive was short but it seemed long due to the heat. On the way, I was stopped by an old woman asking for lift - I instantly stopped (I wouldn't have done this if it was in Blore) and asked where she wanted to go in my own version of Tamil - she guided me while she carefully sat on the scooter - 5min ride and she talked abt her daughter, SIL, grandkids and her son, while her family took care of her really well, she mentioned she was still working (selling vegies at the market) to keep herself active. I dropped her till her home, she invited me to have lunch - but I was too shy to accept her invitation, bid good bye and left from there (felt so good interacting with her).

I explored Aurovile a bit, spent lot of time walking around the place and then sat at the cafe for lunch. Watched people busy in their conversations, kids, friends, family... I guess, I was the only lone wanderer :).. To my surprise, I bumped into 2 Target girls at Aurovile - I am like not here too .. :). Well, it was a short conversation and I was on my own. On my way back, I lost my way, I then took locals help to find my way back (my Tamil wasn't bad at all). Sweat did not stop dripping, I was tired by the time i got back into the town.. so I got to my room, refreshed and started again. Visited the ashram, sat there for awhile to meditate (a wonderful experience), then drove around every street exploring... then parked my self right abt dinner time at this place called  'la maison rose' - a banglow with boutique + cafe restaurant in the backyard. Beautiful ambience, there was no one yet...sat there with a book and a glass of red wine till my dinner was served. Got back to the hotel and ended my day while i continued to read the book i started.

Day2- Woke up around 6am and went for a walk by the sea. I saw couple of people letting go of Ganesha into the sea (festival tradition). It was not like the Bombay drill, this looked really simple, they were clay ganesha of 1-foot long. I sat by the sea for sometime, the black rocks were mesmerising  and wanted to try out couple of yoga poses. But was not gutsy enough to just do it...again, what the hell... that was the only day I had and I had to do it. I asked a onlooker couple who sat there to take a picture for me while I quickly got down to the lowest rock to do my yoga poses :).... that was really cool I thought. I then walked around a bit and got back to my room. I stayed in the room, started late as I had to checkout first and do other stuff. Well, I was traveling back that same night. Yes, just a 2day trip. I kept the scooter for day 2, left my bag at the reception and wandered around again. Visited one of the oldest ganesh temple around there, a church, then explored some of the local stores and conversations with the store owners.... found another cafe for lunch, sat there reading for couple hours. I still had a lot of time that afternoon and a tank full scooter at my disposal. I just kept driving around pondi lanes from one end to other... stopping by every store or cafe.. took pictures of pondi lanes, its architecture.. the place is beautiful (this is so unlike me, no selfies on this trip). I came here 3yrs ago and the place has changed a bit since then. There are fewer local stores, some big brands creeping in... which i did not like. I wish there is lot of encouragement for the local stores to sustain. I finally landed at 'la maison rose' again for dinner.. now the staff probably recognise me :).  After dinner...I headed back to the hotel, handed over the bike, settled the bills, picked bag headed to the Bus Stop. The bus was on time and this was a non-air condition bus (i wasnt aware when i booked), sweat still dripping ..waited for the bus to move to get some air. I got home at 5:30am and straight in to my room, locked and slept - woke up when one of my colleague called me to ask me about tomorrows meeting. Well, it took me few seconds to recall what that meeting was about .. bringing me back to reality.

Wow! I didn't know I could do this (I have traveled alone on work but never alone like this, my first time). what a wonderful feeling it is? I still cant believe I am back from pondi. Such a lovely place...it kept me grounded, no complaints throughout ...enjoyed every moment...I went with no expectations, I was absolutely ok for the last seat in the bus, i enjoyed the sea view while i waited for hotel to open their gates, I enjoyed the heat/sweat dripping on me while i drove to Aruovile, while i beautifully got tanned, no makeup on this trip, embraced every bit.. there was no rush to get to any where.. there was no expectations.. or trying to make someone happy.., no phone calls from anyone.. time and now i went up to look at FB thats about it  (i am trying to get away from FB, lets see).  It was a wonderful trip and I should do this more often.

Traveling alone by bus to pondi was something I would have not thought of nor would have tried. While I sat in the bus back to bangalore, thinking abt my trip, feeling good abt it.... I was embracing life.. simple people around me, all age groups, all kinds, a young girl who sat next to me was going back to work after a short visit to her parents, they waved at eachother endlessly till they lost sight of the other.. and while I watching this, I looked out to see a White Sunroof Audi with PY registration driving by my side of the window... it looked mesmerising, but I felt happy siting in the bus while the wind blew into my face. Little pleasures of life is what i am watching out for.

InVolVe ME!

Teach me, and I will forget.
Show me, and I will remember.
Involve me, and I will understand.

Involve me, and I will understand - this probably would include all of the senses possible - seeing, feeling, touching, sensing, smelling, hearing, taste, skin etc.. every sensory communicating, the eyes do not see what the heart does not feel. This also means in most cases experiential learning, which means now i really know - it indeed means, involve me, i'll understand.

MAYA aka iLlUsIoN - beware!

I landed into Mumbai airport at 7:20am today and I was at the exit door trying to book for uber cab to GenNext office. One lady (I guess, she was in the same flight as I did), walks up to me and starts saying, 'can I pls say something?'. I was like thinking, maybe she wants to share a cab or something and nodded my head. She continues, 'I have never seen anyone so gorgeous like u, you are very beautiful' and walks away. I am not sure if she even heard me saying, 'oh! Thank you!'. I stood there blank...thinking, 'what just happened' - if Aishwarya rai probably heard this, she would cry. This lady must be one of those individuals who gets up in the morning and decides 'ok, I am going to compliment 3people today ...no matter what'. Grrrrr!!!.....
If she had given me another moment, probably I would have shared her my secret prescription as well - a bad dating week, dead appetite for 3meals, 2hours of sleep, wake up at 3am, no makeup, get on a really early flight and have a grumpy head - that was it. Ugh! all my anger - this is my life, MAYA aka 'illusion' playing its games.

This travel to Mumbai was a good distraction for me....*MAYA talking* - sitting in India's power house - one of reliance's boardrooms, along with all their leaders, listening to them talk about how GenNext's strategy will change the face of Indian startup ecosystem was amazingly encouraging. For a moment, I played along with the MAYA.... thinking how fortunate etc, well! this was not what I want. So, I quietly got up ...met one senior member  (Raghunath Mashelkar - a humble n down to earth gentleman, senior research professor, padmabusan), picked up his personally autographed book and walked out from there as networking sessions continued. For the remaining afternoon, met up with a friend, visited my cousin and spent most time in Mumbai traffic.

So what happened to MAYA (illusion)?...it ended as soon as I was walking towards the Mumbai airport security gate on my return...my left shoe ripped it's sole open and I was dragging my foot to keep the shoe on ...

Well! reality, we cannot miss that..I am gonna just stay close to it ...

I aM mOrE sPiRiTuAl!

"I am more spiritual" ...says Deeksha, while answering to my question on yoga experience. I was then thinking to myself, when did I realize that I was -'spiritual' huh? ..maybe i didn't till recent years.

The drive was exactly an hour from home to yoga-shala in Jayanagar. Deeksha was visiting this school for the first time and I was introducing her to yoga teacher training course. Our conversation was full of life, Deeksha was full of life (i could talk about any topic and she would converse with me like a pro). She is larger than life, a young independent Deeksha, 17 yr old, Sunitha's (friend from work) older daughter - such good upbringing in today's times. I was amazed to know that Deeksha has time for everything - from parents, friends, school, activities, dance, yoga, stage, reading, french, swimming, making friends on the bus, attending seminars of her interest ..so many and she wants to explore more - the best part about this kid was her simplicity - no air about anything, yet very knowledgeable.

Deeksha is an example I would show to anyone of her generation and say this is how we groom our young gurls to become more independently strong inside/out. Some key points to focus - help make their own decisions from very young age, create that eco-system for them to build larger perspectives of life, variety on education to help broaden their knowledge in as many fields as possible, groom them for healthy competition, respecting/valuing older generation, recognizing human race vs religion/blind beliefs. If we focus on grooming our Gen-z (-1) well, reassured we will have a stronger, brighter community.

Entire credit goes to the most inspiring friend of mine - Sunita - the belief behind Deeksha. If Sunita wouldn't dream big and broaden her thinking for Deeksha - Gen-z (-1) will not be able to dream big or broaden their thinking. Its in our hands to groom our younger generation to be better human beings.

WoMeN's DaY!!!!

Disturbed thoughts since the BBC documentary and another news abt similar incident. What are we celebrating? Sales, offers…discounts….

Not everyone might agree with this..but these are my thoughts..

There is more to women’s day...and womanhood, isn't it? ...BigB posted asking this thought provoking question "Woman's Day..?? A single day dedicated to women? But a woman dedicates every day of her life !!!.....”. True, why is one day dedicated to women?. This day, is needed very much for some people atleast who need to know that there’s more to womanhood than their perverted thoughts, low level thinking or being silly. There was one silly status FB update msg today from a well-educated man, says "To all the girls and women. When u leave him free he comes back to you and love u more than ever. Men act tough but deep down they need a stable companion who love them. Happy women's day. Go for it girls and BE the one you want to be." ,.... what is he trying to convey?... is this about him and his own convenience?. We are talking about being the change and if an educated person’s thinking is this level then imagine the others?. To the contrary / contrast, Desmond Tutu says, “Girls and women, you are precious and we ought to do everything in our power to ensure you can be all you can be.” and this is the level of support women need. Not just saying ‘be the one you want to be”… how are you as a fellow human being helping her to ‘be the one she can be’?.

Never to forget - We are also fortunate to be surrounded by some really really great men around us (respect!).. who constantly help “her” be the one she wants to be - the Mr.Mom’s, great mentors, well-wishers, colleagues, friends, family... – they support/celebrate every woman in their life each day. THANK YOU! to all those men.

WOMEN’S DAY! Is not about sales, discounts, offers … its not about giving her a day off… it’s that one day to remind, review your level of thinking to recognize and respect (at the least) womanhood.

Happy Love ❤️. ....

Happy Love ❤️ = just not love....its HAPPY love. You are ready to face any thing in this world, if this one relationship is going well.

It is said that all of us are on a look out for that one PERFECT relationship. A Man on look out for that one 'Happy Woman' in his life and a Woman on look out for that 'one Man with whom she feels secured and protected'. - that one relationship can be anyone - mom, dad, daughter, son, wife, husband, inlaws, grandparents.

A lovely, couples story excerpts from Mahatria reading -

Lets call it as Rama/Sita's story and here how it goes:

Rama was from a not so well to do family, he grew up having just one shirt which he used to wash it every night and wear it in the morning. His dad and brother did the same. As they grew up, they just knew how to live with less. For Diwali, Rama's dad would ask him how much money he wants and Rama would ask for Rs.100 but would get only Rs50. This is the kind of love Rama grew up on, independent thinking, do your own stuff, less is more... etc.

Sita was from a well to do family. She grew up in a family where mom, dad and she would coordinate what to wear for a wedding - to either contrast or to match the life styles. Sita's dad made sure he was there for Sita in smallest of smallest decisions. For Diwali, her dad used to take her for shopping and get her what she wanted. This is the kind of love Sita grew up on, dependent, caring for small things, togetherness, consensus, etc.

Now Rama and Sita get married. The second day of their marriage Sita asks Rama to take her to her parents house. Rama agrees and asks her to get ready. She displays 3 set of clothes and is waiting for Rama to come inside the bedroom to help her select one. But Rama without knowing the expectations, just walks into the bed room changes his clothes and walks out. Sita is annoyed, chooses one dress to wear, gets dressed and leaves. Its Diwali time again, first Diwali after marriage for them, Rama comes home after work with some shopping bags. Sita excited to see this, asks him what was it. Rama says its his Diwali shopping. There goes her mood again, Rama unknowing of her expectations, thinks of it and he asks her how much money she needs for shopping. Well, Sita was never asked like this, her dad used to accompany for her shopping and she never worried about the cost. She slams the door and Rama is waiting outside requesting her to allow him inside, begging, apologizing etc. There were many such small instances that disturbed Rama and Sita's married life. small fights, small misunderstanding leading to bigger issues, there was purely compatibility issue, leading to divorce discussions later in the first year. But, they survived 23yrs of married life... amazing isn't it?..

The secret shared was that, they understood the different backgrounds they (Rama and Sita) came from, i.e., their understanding of love was different from each of their perspective and the expectations were different.

Also, Rama started loving Sita as he would love his daughter (its unconditional and you wouldn't get upset with you daughter for such small things) and Sita started loving Rama as she would love her son (she wouldn't hate her son or want to get separated if he did something silly).

Finding that balanced compatibility in a relationship is so key and this is what Rama /Sita did which lead to finding their Happy Love ❤️ .......

Is this the STORY OF AGASTHYA or his parents?

Story excerpts from Mahatria reading....

Jothsna was in her early 30's when she had her first child, beautiful was that moment when she held her little Agasthya. She loved him to the core from that very moment, she promised to be the best mother ever. Both she and her husband as parents, ensured they be the best ever in their roles and ensured they gave better quality of life to Agasthya, than they ever had for themselves. Both with utmost dedication committed every moment of their life to Agasthya.

Little Agasthya grew up to be a 2yrs old, started becoming more and more fond of his parents and started understanding the utmost love that they shared for him. He would do anything to gain their appreciation. He started talking little little things, he started showing gestures of love. Parents Jothsna and her husband were on top of the world. Little Agasthya, as he grew up - he was a great student in his class, always first grades. He was great in sports, always medals. He was first in his high school, he went up to do higher studies, made it big, always was a star in his parents eyes. Parents were always on 'top of the world' because of Agasthya's success. Agasthya in the process, for his studies and career, he had gone far away from his parents, missed them dearly all the time.

He wanted to ensure he settles down fast in his life and give that same love / affection 10 folds as his parents gave him while he was growing up. Agasthya is now married and has a little Agasthya, he is on top of his world and sharing this news with his parents was the ultimate moment for him. He wants his parents to come and stay with him, and wants to ensure he does 10 folds to his parents to share his happiness and success of life. The parents, Jothsna and her husband, are on top of the world to stay close to their only Agasthya.

But, in this entire process in their life, Jothsna and her husband had forgotten one important thing - importance of health when required. They had neglected so much that their body is not permitting them to accept the invitation from their only son, Agasthya. Their body is not responding to the required travel, they are unable to enjoy their little one's success. This is hurting Agasthya a lot because he loves his parents and wants to do so much for them, he wants them to be part of his success. But he is helpless, at the least he can do is to provide good health care and that's about it.

Now, had it been that - Jothsna and her husband had taken good care of their health in the process of bringing up Agasthya, they could have stood by their beloved Agasthya throughout his life's success.

"What is the point if your body doesn't permit you to be with your loved ones? "

If you love your family, you will not be an old-age nuisance to your family. You alone have complete CONTROL over your health, it's in your hands to take good care of your body or not. You are the inspiration to your child to adapt to a life style that you show you lead.

You become the living inspiration to the little world around you.

"Abusing the GIFT is abusing the GIVER. Cherishing the GIFT is cherishing the GIVER" (human body is the ultimate gift from the supreme, cherish it!)

Happy Life!!!

SHOW STOPPER!!!!

Today, I came into work as any other day (7.30am. Well, yes I come to work this early and its because that's when we all start our work at this client site. Otherwise, I am not at all a morning person..but have managed to do the early attendance on this assignment) and I cannot log into my company's network. So, no emails, no portals, no network absolutely. Everything was down, it took more than couple hours for "xxx" network to get fixed. In these hours with the network outage, we all did not know what to do (we 10 of us sit in the same room), some are trying to discuss work, some pretending to work offline etc. But I sat there blank and was thinking how emails drive our daily work and prioritize. We are (atleast IT) so much dependent on emails to tell us what's important and what's not in our daily life.

Communication is for sure a show stopper!! (be it technology beating technology or something else beating technology) :) ...

A POEM!!!!

I loved this poem ......

One Art

by Elizabeth Bishop

The art of losing isn't hard to master;
so many things seem filled with the intent
to be lost that their loss is no disaster.

Lose something every day. Accept the fluster
of lost door keys, the hour badly spent.
The art of losing isn't hard to master.

Then practice losing farther, losing faster:
places, and names, and where it was you meant
to travel. None of these will bring disaster.

I lost my mother's watch. And look! my last, or
next-to-last, of three loved houses went.
The art of losing isn't hard to master.

I lost two cities, lovely ones. And, vaster,
some realms I owned, two rivers, a continent.
I miss them, but it wasn't a disaster.

--Even losing you (the joking voice, a gesture
I love) I shan't have lied. It's evident
the art of losing's not too hard to master
though it may look like (Write it!) like disaster.

UNEXPECTED!!!

Do you like the unexpected? Like, you are trying to decode something for days..you are almost ready to give up and suddenly it starts working or you are watching a movie and a particular scene brings smile to your face..where you did not except that expression or Someone walking by looks at you n compliments or Someone gets u lunch when you are busy on a conference call - The unexpected is very sweet. We also have the bad unexpected things that happen to us - Like u miss your train or flight delayed or canceled or someone at work is in a bad mood and you wonder what the F*** did I do (even though its not u) ...and you think these things happen only to me why? ..

Appreciate the 'UNEXPECTED' good or bad, we will not have anything to complain lol!!! :) ....

FINDING BALANCE!!!!

My brother and I, when in school, we had this lady who used to walk us to school and back home every day (school was just 5 blocks away). The lady (I don't remember her name) had strict instructions from my mom that she would not let go our hands till we get to our destination (this was due to traffic etc). I would let myself of her hook and walk on the pavement edge (She used to yell at me to stay close to her). I liked it when I did the little balancing thing on the pavement edge. My little feet would slip off and I would get back on the edge again. I did that every day to and from School. I was 8 and my brother must have been 5 or something. I don't remember when i stopped slipping of the pavement edge but I always liked to do that little dance on my way. Subconsciously sometimes even now, I do walk on the pavement edge balancing myself for fun. How I wish, I found that balance in life subconsciously? Well...life is all about balancing, isn't it?

Last night, my friends and I decided to watch this movie 'Eat Pray Love'. After a stressful day, we were still debating if we should go for this late night movie (10:15pm, it was just couple blocks away and NYC is always busy). Anyways, we decide we would go and if its too much, we will sleep it off through the movie.

I felt the movie was slow at the beginning but Julia Roberts has done a great job. Its a very well taken movie. Gist - She, like any other human being, is trying to strike a balance in her life with what she has to do, likes to do and whom does she really love etc. She gives up everything goes around the world, in the process meets different people, culture etc. Finally, she is able to strike a balance in her life. The movie was not about traveling around the world to find what you want but I feel, it was all about balancing ones life.

How many of us are in a relationship because we just got there or because we have to keep up with it or keep doing stuff just because everyone else is doing or because you have to be there for these people or this job etc etc etc...'is this really what I want to do?' is what one should ask.

All of us are in search of something and we name it as 'Happiness' (search is on constantly for...maybe LOVE, MONEY, JOB, CHANGE, PASSION, AMBITION etc etc). We postpone our happiness, saying I will be happy if I had this or that etc. Can anyone define happiness? Happiness is different to different people. But, do we strike a balance with each other and accept that happiness of others?....

The movie ends with a beautiful quote,"To lose balance sometimes for love is part of living a balanced life".

Willy, late 40s Afro-American, was a doorman at my apartment building in NYC. I lived in this building for 2years. He always opened the cab door for me, helped me swing the revolving door during winters (they get tight), lend me umbrellas when I forgot mine and stood at the door with a sad face. Helped me move my stuff from apartment to apartment (I moved 3 apartments in the same building in 2yrs), helped me open my apartment when I forgot my keys (atleast once every week). Willy was there when I needed him.... In turn, I always made sure I treated him with respect, got him cake once in a while, tipped him once in a while, got him lottery tickets for Christmas (not sure if he won any), sometimes starbuck's gift cards and a hug when I was leaving the place.

Service provider no 2 - we called her Aunty (her name was Seema) and this was when I worked for Satyam Hyderabad and lived there for 2yrs.

Seema Aunty, a Marwari woman, cooked lunch at her house for Satyam Employees (Her house was close to Satyam office and she being a house wife started this lunch business). She was very organized, made only vegetarian Marwari food, was awesome cook and did everything by herself (Her husband worked as a accountant in a small firm and her Two brilliant kids went to IIT Mumbai and Warangal REC). She had atleast 20 to 25 people for lunch and the lunch met six sigma standards I must say. My rented place was one block away from my work place and Seema Aunt’s house. I was introduced to her by a colleague and then on I had my lunch almost every day at her place. Some times I used to be there a bit early and instead of just sitting and waiting...I would step in to her kitchen and help. She liked it and those conversations while I had my lunch. She helped me get a gas cylinder, helped me with my cooking skills... we went shopping, temple, morning walks, dinners .... Uncle (her husband), used to tell me stories from his work place etc. He used to help me with other outdoor stuff like finding an electrician, mechanic for my Scooty, cable guy, internet, phone etc. Mutually, I tried to be there for them when they needed me. Helped them with their internet skills (to talk/chat with their kids. Kids were proud that their parents learnt using internet), rented movies for them, accompanied them to their doctor etc. They also met my parents when they visited me in Hyd. This was in 2004 and they have now moved from Hyd to Jaipur. They keep in touch and ring me up occasionally.....

Service Provider no 3 - Mr. Matt, a British who shuttles between NY (work) and London (family) lived in the same building as I did in NYC.

Mr. Matt, a Brit, mid 50s lived in NY for work. Looks very Brit, spoke Brit (of course) slim, in suit and tie. He worked at NY stock exchange and lived in the same building as I, but every 2 weeks he visited his family in London.

So, how did I meet Mr. Matt? On one snowy day, I walked out of my apartment building to get a cab, I saw Mr. Matt waiting for a cab. So, I stood behind him (since he was there first). Willy, the doorman, asked me, ‘Yellow cab or Black cab... “. I said yellow (black cabs were expensive). Mr. Matt looked at me said,’ Good Morning’. I wished him back and we waited. A black cab pulled over and Mr. Matt walked up to the cab...then looked back and asked me if I wanted to share a cab with him. I said ok and got in.

My stop was just few blocks away... so, Mr. Matt asked me where I wanted to get off and told the driver. Then he asked me where I was from and what am I doing in NY etc. After I gave him my intro, it was his turn. He told about himself and then when he learnt that I lived/worked in London for a year, he was happy and started asking me if I visited this place ..that place etc etc. He told me his fav place was Paris and asked me if I had ever done the Euro-Rail trip (I hadn't..Ya! I know..). He had taken his girlfriend (now his wife) for lunch to Paris by Euro-Rail one day..(Just for Lunch? that was awesome…I thought). He said I must do that trip once atleast and talked about how much he likes the Euro-Rail etc etc. All this talk was during this 10min ride to my workplace. The cab pulled over and I got off, thanked him for the ride. He said. ‘will see you at the apartment building someday…have a good day!’. He was going to London that day... ...and I did not see him again….

These were few interesting people I could relate in the same sequence when I read the article from the above URL.... there are many such wonderful people that I have come across. So far it’s been all good experiences with all these wonderful people (touch wood!!!!!)……

IS THIS ALL ABOUT MY BAGS??? LOL!!

-->
Sometimes its amazes the kind of people I meet... and the series of episodes that happen in couple hours. I can only ..simply.. stop ...absorb and observe.....

It was 7pm when I collected my bags at Phily airport. I was still debating if I should take the train or take the taxi into downtown.  I was coming from Pittsburg (it was a long work week for me) into Phily to take the train to NYC. I was so looking forward for this weekend and was too excited / happy that evening.. I was going to NYC after a month and meeting my friends for the weekend.

Finally, I decided I will take the taxi and collect my bags that I had left at the Mariott Courtyard the previous weekend I stayed in Phily (ya, I am on a project that requires lot of travel and I am living out of suitcases...home for me is Bangalore.). So, waved for a cab... a white cab stopped and a short sardarji (maybe in his late 30s) got off and opened the cab door for me (this was unusual). I told him I wanted to go to the city centre Marriott Courtyard to collect my bags and then to Amtrak station. It was 20min ride to Phily downtown, I had grabbed a Twix (was hungry) at the airport and chewed into it while i checked my messages on my phone. It was a quite ride with lot of silence. When we entered into the city I looked out to admire Phily downtown and saw we were nearing to city center. I realised I had asked for two destinations.. one to the hotel first and then to continue to the Train station. I thought it would be fair to start a fresh fair after we picked the bags at the hotel (usually any destination from airport into downtown was a flat rate). So, as he stopped by the hotel. I told him I will only take 5mins to grab my bags that I had parked in the hotel so, he can charge for this journey and start a new one for going to the train station (anyone else, I am sure, would have agreed for this deal). But he said, no Madam...its alright its hardly 8 or 9$ ..don't worry we will continue with the same meter. I was surprised and insisted again, but he did not agree. I went in got my bags and he quickly helped me board the bags. We reached the Train Terminal and I (ofcourse) paid him his extra fare (that I would have normaly paid) in the form of tip. He offloaded my bags and was too concerned about the fact that I was alone with lot of bags and no help. So, he asked me wait at the taxi, while he went in and got some guy to help me. By the time I thanked him for his help; he wished me 'safe journey' and disappeared into the pool of taxis.

I then followed the guy who was helping me with my bags. He was a young African American guy. He quickly got a big luggage cart and loaded all three bags. He took me to a helpdesk counter called 'Red Hat Service'. He asked me to wait there and someone with a 'Red Hat' will come help me load the bags into the train. I said I need to get a ticket and asked him if he can stand by my bags. He obliged while I went and got my ticket. I thanked him and took out a few dollars to tip him. He politely said no with a smile and went back on his duty. I stood there looking at him walk by till I was interrupted by the 'Red Hat' guy. The 'RedHat' guy was short middle aged Italian...he had think accent and always smiled. He looked at my bags..raised eyebrows but said don't worry, we will make sure this is taken care till you get a taxi in NYC (that was such a relief). He hit up a conversation with me while he put up tags on my bags. When I said I was basically from India...his face lit up, started talking about his liking for Ayurvedic Medicines etc etc. Then he said his grandfather was from Italy, who moved to America in his teenage..etc etc. In that 15mins of time….he spoke so many things, told me about his daughter, spoke about today’s youth, about eating healthy, abt ayurvedic medicines (again). At the end he made quite a statement, he said - 'I do not understand why everyone living here are so possessive about this country. This country does not belong to any one person. Everyone has come from some or the other place. So then why can not every one live happily'.  My train arrived; he boarded all my bags and showed me to my seat. This time I made sure this guy (atleast) accepted the tip. He gave a big wide smile and said it was nice talking to me.

It was a 1hr ride into NYC, I sat there reading this novel that I picked up at the Pittsburg Airport (haven’t finished yet but its keeping me hooked on to it. Its called ‘That Hour I First Believed’). When I got to NY Penn station, (as the Italian ‘Red Hat’ guy promised that my bags will be taken care… yes it was indeed) there was another ‘Red Hat’ guy in NY was waiting at the Train for me. He came in asked for my last name and boarded my bags on to his cart .. asked me ‘Taxi?’, I said ‘Yes’ and he said ‘Follow me’. That’s it… I just followed him to the street and he waved for a taxi that stopped, boarded all my luggage, stood there fiddling with my bags (waiting for the tip actually). I took out few dollars, politely said thank you and gave him a smile. He just took the money and left (not sure if he even noticed my smile).

Well! what am i saying...? now this is NYC… no one has time for such things here...

ALTERATION !!!

"Lucky chengs..is the place I wanna go"....says my Manager standing at my office door. I was like "ya sure...but, what is it??" ....my manager, 'its a place where you will see 6ft tall women entertaining you...' . I asked him, 'are you sure...?? should we go ahead and book a table ...'. He walked away saying 'ya, Mareen is doing the honors...' and we 15 of us landed at this place (it was my manager's send off party and he got to choose where he wanted to go).

'Lucky Chengs' was way downtown (1Ave/2st) NYC and the place looked very shady. My manager and couple more were excited....and rest of us had no idea (atleast me) what this place was like. The place was dimly lit.. and there was nobody yet (it was only 7pm)...we stood near the bar while they checked our IDs and let us order our drinks. Then I suddenly saw something unsual at the bar..the bar attendant was a Drag Queen (A drag queen, usually a man, who dresses, and usually acts, like a women for the purpose of entertaining or performing)...so this place was a drag queen show place. Some of us looked at each other and just continued with the flow. With a little unease I was trying to smile and look away...(this was ofcourse my first time at a place like this).

Our table was set and we all settled in.... the food was a set menu...so the food was served faster (food was not so great though). People started coming in and other tables started filling up. I was still at unease and sat there thinking of an excuse to leave the place early. But then the show started. One of the Drag Queens started talking from behind the scene. Then she (i would like to address as she) came over introduced herself saying she was from Singapore...loves NYC and its been a decade since she moved here(she talked abt her family and how she was distanced because her parents were worried abt the soceity etc). Then she introduced her 2 business partners who run this place along with her. They briefly gave an introduction of how they run the restaurant and they were very grateful to have all of us over to see their show. There were 3 Drag Queens and they were the staff, cooks, business partners ...everything there. All the three performed and then the last step was to call on 2 people from each table and do a performance (two of my colleagues got up). My manager was a happy little kid at the end and we all walked out thanking them for their wonderful show.

I was a bit taken back to see these people so closely and to know their life. I was ashamed of myself for being so ignorant and unaware. They are humans too...if they are not normal its not their fault isn't it or I should say they are normal as per them and we are normal as per us. So, we have no right to say anything. They were such great people I must say....very humble, very human.

I definitely walked out with a different perspective towards life... there is so much beyond our daily lives ...there is so much beyond our career..our own family...our own problems..etc etc..

A small alteration in our own brain takes us a long way...
